Up-Set
  j. marciano James L. Marciano
CEO and Founder
Up-Set, LLC

Up-Set, LLC is the holding company for the companies I've founded, co-founded, and invested in since 1995. Entrepreneurs looking for an active angel investor should feel free to contact me.

Prior to Up-Set, I was a management consultant for five frustrating (why don't we ever implement anything?) years. I received an AB from Harvard College in 1988 and an MBA from Dartmouth College (Tuck) in 1993. I've been a guest speaker at Harvard Business School and a contributor to industry publications, including the Wall Street Journal. You can find my email address hidden here: photo.

My wife Ellen and I live in NYC (Brooklyn Heights) with our two maltese, Miso and Okra. My interests include BMW motorcycles, animal rights, an end to our two party system of government, and alternative healthcare treatments for chronic illnesses (check out oxygen.md - in beta).

I have a real pet peeve against poor customer service. As an example, check out Dial7Sucks a NYC car service that left me stranded in the rain on my way to the airport. I've been trying to find a solution to recording calls with customer service reps since 1984. I finally found one that works: Pamela for Skype.

I have several Domains For Sale: mailtoll.com, emailtoll.com, oldemail.com,oldemailaddress.com, returned.com, undeliverable.com, greenhomeclub.com and thegreenhomeclub.com, oxygen.md (good for HBOT business), and rematch.com and re-match.com (currently a dating site; trademark from USPTO comes with them). Click on my email address hidden above to discuss.

oursquareTheSquare, the "intelligent alternative" to other online communities, was the first company I started, circa August 1996. TheSquare raised $600,000 in 1999 from a small group of angels and $6 million from VC's and angels two days before the "bubble burst" in the Spring of 2000. It is the subject of the award winning docoumentary by Thurston Smith, "Silicon Alley Stories". TheSquare.com was sold to Ben Carroccio, one of the co-founders of HotJobs (now owned by Yahoo!). Ben is a Columbia graduate; he and his team have done an amazing job, staying true to the original vision.
refer-itRefer-It, the first search engine for revenue-sharing programs was launched in October 1997 with seven affiliate programs; there are now over 12,000 programs listed. I sold Refer-it to Alan Meckler's company internet.com (now Jupiter Media on the NASDAQ: JUPM) in April of 1999. He also acquired my Affiliate Solutions conference business, which was the first conference to focus on the emerging affiliate industry. Mr. Meckler is well known for selling his Internet World Trade Show to Penton Publications for $274 million and even better known for his outspoken blog: Meckler Blog.
return pathReturn Path, provides a wide range of B-B email solutions. Conceived in June 1998, Return Path finally got going at the end of 1999 when I hired Matt Blumberg as CEO and he brought along his COO Jack Sinclair. They have done a fantastic job of raising new capital and acquiring under-valued assets that have a strategic fit. ReturnPath has recently been named one of the fastest growing private companies in the USA by Inc. Magazine.

madeline.comMadeline, the official website for my maternal grandfather Ludwig Bemelmans' beloved children's character. This one's not for sale!
madeline.comCreditAgency.org, in the works. All Americans should request a "fraud alert" be placed on their credit file.
theprivacycard.comThe Privacy Card, the start of a new kind of secure credit card, helping consumers to protect their identy not only from identity thieves but also from merchants. Waiting for patent approval before launch.
