In these evolutionary sketches for Pepito, one can see Bemelmans working in the style of Pablo Picasso; perhaps he was trying to get into a Spanish mood.

Saw Picasso, who is a fine man, but dehors of all except his work, a stranger walking through his tableaux. I think quite mad, fortunately he devised his own therapy and fortunately it rains money on him. I think if Van Gogh would have had his luck, he would have lived.
P. is extremely generous, pure, and of those limitations he has a thickness of line now which never varies, and a manner of composition which is also limited to the very beautiful things he does.
His hands would seem to be not those of an artist, rather a hot mixer, a mason. They are like two, five-pronged shovels on a very thick Picasso like arm thick handle. As every artist forever designs himself, so does he. He uses mortar colors, he is in every one of his pictures.
