Have you ever wondered about the Madeline books that might have been?
In the many notes left behind by Ludwig Bemelmans, there are sketches and snatches of verse that reveal some of the other ideas he had for adventures of Madeline and the girls. Some of these evolved, such as Madeline and the Arab into Madeline and the Magician into eventually Madeline's Christmas. Others seem to have been quickly changed; was Amadou the kernel of the idea for Madeline's Rescue?
