MADELINE IN LONDON:
After thinking some three years in images on this book, looking at London,
sketching London, going through books, photographs, doing at least a thousand
sketches, now that the time of execution has arrived, almost all that was
preconceived has to be discarded and a whole new system of visual presentation
invented on account of something that did not come out of hiding until
now.
THE USE THAT HAS BEEN MADE OF THIS MATERIAL IN ADVERTISING, FOR EXAMPLE
A WHOLE PAGE DONE OF THE SCOTCH GUARDS, IS OUT, FOR IT LOOKS LIKE AN AD
FOR DEWARS SCOTCH WHISKEY.
Luckily I have swung myself back on the trapeze and found a way out, and
that is always, to go back and look at it with fresh eyes, so I have locked
all the soldiers and parade stuff that was away, and rearranged them in
new formations and placed them so, that they do not look like whiskey ads,
traveling posters or 'Come Visit England' throw aways.
